Yokahu Tower

El Yunque, Puerto Rico

What it is

Yokahu Tower is the stone observation tower that has become the postcard image of El Yunque, rising 65 feet beside PR-191 near the lower entrance to the forest. Built in 1963 and named after the Taino spirit of good, its spiral staircase leads to a lookout with sweeping views over the rainforest canopy, the coastal plain and, on clear days, the offshore islands of Culebra and the Atlantic. It is the easiest big view in the forest and the natural first stop on the drive up. The tower was designed to echo a medieval watchtower, and from the top the scale of the protected forest becomes obvious in a way the trails alone never reveal: a rolling green blanket that drops toward Luquillo and the sea, broken by ridgelines that catch the morning cloud. Interpretive signs at the base explain the forest zones you are looking across, from the tabonuco lowlands to the dwarf cloud forest on the highest peaks, making the tower a useful primer on what makes El Yunque ecologically rare.

How to visit

Visiting Yokahu Tower takes only 15 to 20 minutes: park in the small lot across the road, climb the spiral stairs and enjoy the panorama. There is no entry fee for the tower itself. Because it sits low on PR-191, it is usually reachable even on days when the upper trails are busy, and it makes an ideal orientation stop before deciding which waterfall or trail to tackle higher up. Go in the morning if you can, since the coastal view clouds over most afternoons and the light is flatter for photos later in the day. The staircase is narrow and can feel busy when a tour bus arrives, so a quick visit before mid-morning usually means having the lookout to yourself. There is a small gift and information kiosk nearby, restrooms at adjacent stops, and enough parking turnover that even a full lot rarely means a long wait. Pair the tower with the nearby Big Tree boardwalk or the La Mina trailhead to turn a short photo stop into a half-day in the forest.

Hours & practical info

Open daily during forest hours, roughly 7:30am to 6pm. No entry fee.
